Exclude any product from your loyalty rewards and from earning points

A loyalty reward that discounts the whole cart works well right up to the moment it lands on a product you can’t afford to discount. Now in RewardsWP, you choose which products a reward discounts. It can cover everything in the cart except the items you’d rather keep at full price, such as a low-margin line, a gift card or a brand whose pricing you don’t control.

Points work the same way, so you can exclude products from earning points while the rest of the order earns as usual.

Let me show you how to keep products out of a reward, then out of earning, and what your customers see before they spend their points. You can try that last part for yourself in the demo below.

Before a customer spends any points, the widget shows what the reward covers.

Keep any product out of a reward

It starts with a new Applies to setting on every dollar off and percentage off reward. Leave it on Entire order, click Exclude items, and pick the products, categories, tags or brands to keep out.

You’ll find it in Ways to Redeem and in your referral rewards, and in VIP entry rewards if you run VIP Tiers. At checkout only the items the reward covers get the discount, and if nothing in the cart qualifies, your customer sees a message that says why.

Keep any product from earning points

Earning has its own rule, because the products you’d rather not discount aren’t always the ones you’d rather not reward. Open Make a purchase under Ways to Earn, and add them under Earns on with Exclude items.

From then on, excluded items earn nothing, and the rest of the order earns points as it always has. The points banner on the product page follows the same rule, so an excluded product doesn’t promise points it won’t give.

Point a reward at only the products you pick

Sometimes you want the opposite, a reward that works on one product line only. Choose Specific items and pick what the reward applies to, such as 15% off sun care for the summer. Applying a reward to specific items is available on the Plus and Pro plans.

If you pick a category, it stays current on its own, so products you add to it later are covered too. Earns on gets the same choice, on the same plans. Either way, an excluded item always stays out, even when it sits in a category you picked.

Let sale items keep their sale price

On WooCommerce, turn on Exclude sale items in a reward’s Applies to, and anything already on sale keeps its sale price. The rest of the cart still gets the discount, so a reward never stacks on top of a markdown you’ve already given.

Your customers see what a reward covers before they spend

All of this would mean little if a customer only found out at checkout what their reward covers. That’s why the rewards widget now asks them to confirm before they spend any points. It lists the reward’s terms under “Before you redeem”, including what the reward applies to, and shows how many points they’ll have left.

Available on every RewardsWP plan

A reward can now cover the whole cart without landing on the products you can’t afford to discount, and those products stop earning points too.

If you already run RewardsWP, all you need is a plugin update to start excluding products.

Next step: open RewardsWP > Settings > Points, click Make a purchase under Ways to Earn, and add the products you’d rather not reward under Earns on. Every rule is in our guide to excluding products from rewards and points.
